Why Friday?
Friday closes this week’s work and sets up the next. Taking time to reset workstations, equipment, tools and materials is both a review of the week and a way to make sure everyone starts Monday with a clean, orderly workplace ready to go.

What do we do on Fridays?
It’s not just a “big cleanup” — we work through the 5S standards item by item:

  • Sort: Clear out surplus materials, waste packaging and idle tools generated during the week. Remove what isn’t needed so it doesn’t take up space.

  • Set in Order: Return essential items to their defined locations and verify labels, so anyone can find what they need quickly.

  • Shine: Wipe down equipment and workbenches, clean floor corners, and check for abnormalities while cleaning.

  • Standardize: Review how well the week’s standards were maintained, record issues and follow up so results don’t slide back.

  • Sustain: Build the habit of “put it back after use, tidy up before leaving” — not relying on Friday alone.

Why it matters
The hard part of 5S isn’t doing it once — it’s doing it every week. Our Friday 5S routine turns “orderly” into the norm: less time searching for things, earlier detection of equipment issues, fewer safety hazards. More importantly, it gets everyone involved in managing the workplace — the floor belongs to all of us, and so does the standard.
